Kelantan is located on the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, bordered by Narathiwat Province, South Thailand to the north; Terengganu to the southeast, Perak to the west, Pahang to the south and the South China Sea to the northeast.

Kelantan terletak di bahagian timur laut Semenanjung Malaysia, bersempadan dengan wilayah Narathiwat, Selatan Thailand di utara; Terengganu di sebelah tenggara, Perak di sebelah barat, Pahang di selatan dan Laut China Selatan di timur laut.

Kelantan is the fourth largest state in Peninsular Malaysia, with a total land area of 17,100 sq. Km.

Terrain (Rupa Bumi)

Kelantan is separated from the rest of Peninsular Malaysia by the Titiwangsa Mountains. There are more than 300 mountains in Kelantan. The highest and the most prominent is Mount Chamah, which stands at 2,171 metres. Mount Chamah is situated in the north-western part of Kelantan and it is the fifth highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Kelantan River is the major river in Kelantan. Kelantan River drains a catchment area of about 11,900 sq. Km. in the north-eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, including part of the Taman Negara National Park and flows into the South China Sea. Although the Kelantan River is the major river, it refers only to the part from the estuary to the confluence of its two main tributaries, namely the Galas River and the Lebir River. The main river from the source to the estuary comprises Betis River, Nenggiri River, Galas River and Kelantan River.

The lower reaches of Kelantan River encompass a large delta of about 1200 hectares. It consists of a bay, mangrove forest and the estuary of the river.

Kelantan dipisahkan dari seluruh Semenanjung Malaysia oleh Pergunungan Titiwangsa. Terdapat lebih dari 300 gunung di Kelantan. Climate (Iklim)

Kelantan has an equatorial climate just like the other states in Malaysia. The temperatures are between 21°C and 32°C. The state has a significant amount of rainfall during the year, even during the driest month. The wettest months of the year are November to January, during the east-coast monsoon season.

Kelantan mempunyai iklim khatulistiwa seperti negeri-negeri lain di Malaysia. Suhu antara 21°C dan 32°C. Negeri mempunyai jumlah hujan yang besar sepanjang tahun, bahkan di bulan paling kering. Bulan paling basah dalam setahun adalah November hingga Januari, semasa musim tengkujuh pantai timur.

History (Sejarah)

Kelantan’s history goes back to prehistoric times. The early history of Kelantan has links with the Khmer Empire, Funan Kingdom, Sri Vijaya, Siam and Majapahit. Kelantan is an important trade centre during the 15^th century and its ruler, Raja Kumar obtained independence from Siam.

In 1499, Kelantan became a vassal state of the Melaka Sultanate. When Melaka fell in 1511, Kelantan became divided and was ruled by small landlords, who paid tribute to the Sultanate of Pattani. The different territories under the small landlords were unified in 1760. There were a few civil wars with its neighbouring state, Terengganu in the 18^th and early 19^th centuries. Kelantan was formed when the ruler made an alliance with Siam in 1835.

Kelantan became one of the Unfederated Malay States when the Siamese relinquished their claims over Kelantan with the signing of the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909. During the Japanese invasion of Malaya in 1941, Kelantan was the first place that the Japanese landed. In 1943, Kelantan became a province of Thailand but was taken back by the British upon the end of World War II in August 1945.

Kelantan became part of the Malayan Union in 1946, then the Federation of Malaya on February 1, 1948. Kelantan gained independence from the British on August 31, 1957 together with the other Malayan states. It became a part of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.

Sejarah Kelantan kembali ke zaman prasejarah. Sejarah awal Kelantan mempunyai hubungan dengan Kerajaan Khmer, Kerajaan Funan, Sri Vijaya, Siam dan Majapahit. Kelantan adalah pusat perdagangan yang penting pada abad ke-15 dan pemerintahnya, Raja Kumar memperoleh kemerdekaan dari Siam.

Pada tahun 1499, Kelantan telah menjadi negeri bawahan Kesultanan Melaka. Kelantan has a population of 1.89 million. Bumiputeras (Malays and other indigenous people) constitute more than 95% of the population, followed by Chinese (about 3%), Indians and other races, including Thais.

As the Kelantanese Malays are the predominant ethnic group in the state, they speak Kelantanese Malay, which is different from Bahasa Malaysia as well as the other colloquial Malay spoken in other states in Malaysia.

Kelantan is one of the nine Malay states in Malaysia. Hence, Kelantan has a hereditary ruler, called Sultan.

Kelantan State Government (Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan)

Like the other states in Malaysia, the Kelantan State Government comprises the State Executive Council and the State Legislative Assembly. The members of the State Legislative Assembly comprise elected State Assemblymen from the state constituencies. The members of the State Executive Council (EXCO) are appointed from among the members of the State Legislative Assembly. The EXCO is similar in function to the Cabinet at the Federal level. The EXCO is led by the Menteri Besar,who serves as the head of government in Kelantan. The Menteri Besar and his EXCO are answerable to the State Legislative Assembly.

Seperti negeri-negeri lain di Malaysia, Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan terdiri daripada Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri dan Dewan Undangan Negeri. Anggota Dewan Undangan Negeri terdiri daripada Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri yang terpilih dari DUN. Anggota Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri (EXCO) dilantik dari kalangan anggota Dewan Undangan Negeri. EXCO serupa dengan Kabinet di peringkat Persekutuan. EXCO diketuai oleh Menteri Besar, yang bertugas sebagai ketua kerajaan di Kelantan. Local Governments (Kerajaan Tempatan)

The local governments in Kelantan comprise the Municipal Council of Kota Bharu and eleven district councils. The Kota Bharu Municipal Council administers the municipal of Kota Bharu while the district councils administer their respective districts. The eleven district councils are Bachok District Council, Dabong District Council, Gua Musang District Council, Jeli District Council, Ketereh District Council, Kuala Krai District Council, Machang District Council, Pasir Mas District Council, Pasir Puteh District Council, Tanah Merah District Council and Tumpat District Council.

Kerajaan tempatan di Kelantan terdiri daripada Majlis Perbandaran Kota Bharu dan sebelas majlis daerah. Majlis Perbandaran Kota Bharu mentadbir majlis perbandaran Kota Bharu sementara majlis daerah mentadbir daerah masing-masing. Kelantan Flag (Bendera Kelantan)

The Kelantan flag comprises a red field with a white charge in the centre, which is derived from the state’s coat of arms. The white charge illustrates a five-pointed star, dual spears and unsheathed keris. The colour red represents the honesty of Kelantan’s settlers, citizens and the Sultan. The white charge represents the sanctity of the Sultan of Kelantan.

Bendera Kelantan terdiri dari latar belakang bewarna merah dengan lambang kebesaran bewarna putih di tengahnya, yang berasal dari jata negeri. Lambang kebesaran berwarna putih menggambarkan bintang berbucu lima,dua tombak dan keris yang bersarung. Warna merah mewakili kejujuran penduduk, rakyat dan Raja Negeri Kelantan. Armorial Ensign (Jata Negeri)

The coat of arms of Kelantan bears a coronet, adorned with a crescent and a five-pointed star, which represents the sovereignty of the Sultan of Kelantan. The crescent and the five-pointed star together with three sets of weapons, comprising dual spears, unsheathed keris and cannons form the principal elements of the coat of arms.

The crescent, together with the five-pointed star symbolises the Islamic faith. The dual spears that point upwards together with the unsheathed keris that point diagonally downwards and inwards signify the strength of the Kelantanese Malays. The dual cannons that point diagonally outwards and downwards represent Kelantan’s readiness to defend itself.

The kijang (muntjacs) rampant on both sides supporting the arms, served as a reminder of Kelantan’s long history, which traces back to the rule of the legendary Queen Che’ Siti Wan Kembang who adored her beloved kijang. The motto consists of a scroll written in Jawi, 'Berserah Kepada Tuhan Kerajaan Kelantan' which means Kelantan is entrusted to God.

Jata Negeri Kelantan mengandungi mahkota, dihiasi dengan bulan sabit dan bintang berbucu lima, yang mewakili kedaulatan Sultan Kelantan. Economy (Ekonomi)

Kelantan is predominantly an agrarian economy. Rice, rubber and tobacco are the main produce of Kelantan. Fishing is also an important activity, especially along its coastline. Logging is still being carried out.

Additionally, cottage industries utilising traditional skills are important, especially in handicraft production, which include batik, woodcarving and songket weaving.

More recently, tourism has increased in importance, especially to offshore islands. Manufacturing activities, especially small and medium industries have also gained importance.

Kelantanese Malays constitute about 95% of the population in Kelantan, making them the largest ethnic group in Kelantan. The Kelantanese Malays are closely related to Thai Malays from southern Thailand and Terengganu Malays. Kelantanese Malays and Terengganu Malays are often referred to as ‘Orang Pantai Timur’ (People of the East Coast).

Other ethnic groups in Kelantan comprise Kelantanese Chinese, Peranakans, Thais, Tamils, Temiars and other indigenous people.

Kelantan is popularly known as the “Cradle of the Malay Civilisation” because of its unique culture that distinguishes it from those of other Malays in Peninsular Malaysia. The Malay culture in Kelantan has been considerably influenced by the Indian, Thai and Cham (Austronesian origin in Southeast Asia) cultures.

Although Kelantan is predominantly an Islamic state, there are many Buddhist temples, Christian churches, Hindu temples as well as places of worship of the indigenous people.

Orang Melayu Kelantan membentuk sekitar 95% penduduk di Kelantan, menjadikan mereka kumpulan etnik terbesar di Kelantan. Orang Melayu Kelantan berkait rapat dengan orang Melayu Thai dari selatan Thailand dan orang Melayu Terengganu. Orang Melayu Kelantan dan orang Melayu Terengganu sering disebut sebagai 'Orang Pantai Timur' (Orang Pantai Timur).

Attractions (Tarikan)

Kelantan is home to royal palaces and museums. An example is the Istana Jahar, which houses the Museum of Royal Traditions and Customs.

Kelantan is also famous for its central market, the Siti Khadijah Market, where fresh and ready-to-eat foods are sold. It is both a wet and dry market. What distinguishes the Siti Khadijah Market from other markets in Malaysia is that it is mostly run by women. The market is named after the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, who is known for her entrepreneurial skills.

As there are vast forest areas in Kelantan, the state is also known for its many limestone caves, which include Gua Musang, Gua Ikan and Princess Cave as well as state parks, such as Gunong Stong. The beaches that face the South China Sea are also a tourist attraction in Kelantan.

As majority of the people in Kelantan as Muslims, there are beautiful mosques in the state, such as the Masjid Al-Ismaili and Masjid Muhammadi. Kelantan’s proximity to southern Thailand contributes to the various beautiful Buddhist temples (wat) in the state.

The Kelantanese cuisine is also an attraction. It is greatly influenced by Malay and Thai cuisines, utilising more coconut milk than any other cuisine in the country. The curries are thicker and creamier. There are also a variety of rice, ranging from nasi dagang to nasi ulam.

Kelantan adalah kediaman bagi istana diraja dan muzium kerajaan. Contohnya adalah Istana Jahar, yang menempatkan Muzium Tradisi dan Adat Istana.
